How to Apply for a New Passport in India (Step-by-Step Guide)

Applying for a new passport in India is done through the official Passport Seva system. The process is simple if you follow the steps in order.

1. Create an Account on the Passport Seva Portal

(a). Visit the official website: passportindia.gov.in
(b). Click on New User Registration.
(c). Select your Passport Office based on your residential address.
(d). Enter your personal details such as name, date of birth, email, login ID, and password.
(e). Verify your account by clicking the link sent to your email.

2. Login and Choose “Apply for Fresh Passport”

(a). Click on Existing User Login.
(b). Enter your username and password.
(c). Select Apply for Fresh Passport.
(d). Choose the application method:

Online Form Submission (recommended)
Download PDF form → fill → upload

3. Fill in the Passport Application Form

You need to enter:

(a). Personal details
(b). Family information
(c). Current and permanent addresses
(d). Employment or educational details
(e). Emergency contact
(f). Document selection
(g). Whether applying under Normal or Tatkaal scheme

4. Documents Required for a New Passport

(a) For Adults (18+):

(i) Aadhaar Card
(ii) Voter ID or PAN card (identity proof)
(iii) Birth Certificate (mandatory if born after 1989)

(b) Address proof (any one):

(i) Electricity bill
(ii) Water bill
(iii) Rental agreement
(iv) Bank passbook/statement
(v) Gas bill

(c) For Minors:

(ii) Aadhaar card
(iii) Copies of parents’ passports (if available)


5. Pay the Application Fees

(a) Normal Scheme:

(i) 36 pages: ₹1,500
(ii) 60 pages: ₹2,000

(b) Tatkaal Scheme:

(i) 36 pages: ₹3,500
(ii) 60 pages: ₹4,000

(c) Payment methods:

(i) Debit/Credit card
(ii) Net banking
(iii) UPI
(iv) SBI Challan (optional)


6. Book an Appointment at PSK/POPSK/PSLK

(a). After payment, click Schedule Appointment.
(b). Select your nearest passport office.
(c). Choose an available time slot.
(d). Download your Application Receipt (ARN) and Appointment Letter.


7. Visit Passport Seva Kendra on Appointment Day

Carry originals and photocopies of all required documents.

Your process will go through:

(a) Counter A – Biometric, photo capture, document check
(b) Counter B – Verification
(c) Counter C – Granting officer approval

You get an acknowledgment slip after the process.


8. Police Verification

A police officer will visit your address or call you to the station.
You must show:

(a) Original ID
(b) Address proof
(c) Photographs
Any additional documents requested

After the police report is cleared, passport printing begins.


9. Passport Printing and Delivery

Your passport will be printed and sent via Speed Post to your address.
SMS alerts will be sent for every stage.

How to Renew / Reissue Passport in India

You need to renew/reissue your passport if:

It is expired or expiring soon
Pages are full
It is damaged
It is lost
You want to update details (name, address, spouse name, etc.)


1. Login to Passport Seva Portal

Use your existing login credentials.


2. Select “Reissue of Passport”

Choose the reason for reissue:

(a) Expired passport
(b) Validity expiring within 3 years
(b) Lost or damaged
(d) Change in personal details
(e) Exhaustion of pages


3. Fill in the Reissue Application Form

Update details such as:

(a) Old passport number
(b) Issue date
(c) Expiry date
(d) File number
New address or changed information (if any)

4. Required Documents for Renewal

Old passport (mandatory)
Self-attested photocopies of:

(a) First and last two pages of old passport
(b) ECR/Non-ECR page
(c) Observation pages (if any)
(d) Police verification page

If address is changed, include new address proof.


5. Pay the Renewal Fee

Same fee as new passport:

₹1,500 / ₹2,000 (Normal)
₹3,500 / ₹4,000 (Tatkaal)


6. Book an Appointment

Choose a date and time at the nearest PSK/POPSK.


7. Visit PSK with Your Old Passport

Carry:

(a) Appointment letter
(b) Old passport
(c) Original documents + photocopies

Biometric and verification steps are the same as for new passport applications.


8. Police Verification (If Required)

If your details remain the same and you had previous police clearance, you may not require new verification.
If changes are made, verification may be conducted.


9. Receive Your New Passport

It will be delivered to your home through Speed Post within:

(a) Normal: 5–20 days
(b) Tatkaal: 1–3 days after PSK visit
