How to register GST (Goods & Services Tax) in India ?

Detailed GST Registration Process

The entire GST registration process is conducted online through the official GST Portal (https://www.gst.gov.in/) and is divided into two main parts: Part A and Part B.

Part A: TRN Generation (Temporary Reference Number)


1. Visit the GST Portal: Go to the official website and click on Services > Registration > New Registration.
2. Fill Basic Details:
  • Select 'Taxpayer' as the type of applicant.
  • Select your State and District.
  • Enter the Legal Name of the Business (as per PAN).
  • Enter the Permanent Account Number (PAN) of the business/proprietor.
  • Provide the Email Address and Mobile Number of the primary authorized signatory.
  • Enter the CAPTCHA code.
3. OTP Verification: The system will send two separate One-Time Passwords (OTPs)—one to the mobile number and one to the email ID. Enter both to verify the details.
4. TRN Generation: Upon successful verification, the system will generate a Temporary Reference Number (TRN). This number is essential for completing the rest of the application (Part B) and is valid for 15 days.

Part B: Application Submission (GST REG-01)

1. Login with TRN: Go back to the 'New Registration' page, select the 'Temporary Reference Number (TRN)' option, and log in using your TRN and the CAPTCHA code.
2. OTP Verification (Second Time): An OTP will be sent to the registered mobile and email. Enter the OTP to proceed.
3. Fill the Application: The application will appear in 'Draft' status. Click the 'Edit' icon to begin filling out 10 different sections with business details, including:
  • Business Details: Trade Name, Constitution of Business (e.g., Proprietorship, Company), Jurisdiction details, and date of commencement of business.
  • Promoters/Partners: Details of all owners, partners, or directors (PAN, Aadhaar, address, photo, etc.).
  • Authorised Signatory: Details of the person authorized to act on behalf of the business.
  • Principal Place of Business: Full address and contact details of the main business location, and required address proof.
  • Goods and Services: A list of the top goods and services your business deals in (HSN/SAC codes).
  • Bank Accounts: Details of your business bank account (though this is no longer mandatory at the time of application, it is required for tax refunds).
4. Upload Documents: Upload the mandatory documents for each section as specified. (See the next section for a detailed list).
5. Verification and Submission:
  • Select the Verification checkbox.
  • Submit the application using a Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) for companies/LLPs, or e-Aadhaar verification (EVC) for others (like Proprietorships).
  • Upon successful submission, an Application Reference Number (ARN) will be generated and sent to the registered email and mobile number.

Nnow there's a fast-track option under Rule 14A if your monthly B2B liability < ₹2.5L: auto-approved in 3 days, no officer review hassle!
Also, bank details no longer mandatory upfront (add later for refunds), and Aadhaar auth is smoother via email link (biometric only for high-risk). For proprietorships, EVC OTP works fine—no DSC tension. Composition limit up to ₹1.5Cr goods now. Saved me a trip to GST Suvidha Kendra last month!
