A Ration Card is a vital government-issued document in India that enables eligible households to purchase essential commodities, primarily food grains, at highly subsidized prices through the Public Distribution System (PDS). It is issued by the respective State's Department of Food, Civil Supplies, and Consumer Affairs.

1. Eligibility Criteria
Eligibility is primarily determined by income level and residence, as the card categorizes households based on the National Food Security Act (NFSA), 2013 and state-specific criteria.
  • You must be an Indian Citizen and a resident of the state where you are applying.
  • You or your family members must not possess any other Ration Card in the same state or any other state.
  • The applicant family must live and cook separately.
  • AAY (Antyodaya Anna Yojana) and PHH (Priority Household) cards are issued based on low-income criteria set by the state.

The application for a new Ration Card is usually made via the state's PDS portal or the designated local office.

5. Benefits of the Ration Card
The Ration Card is a core pillar of India's social security framework and offers significant advantages:

1. Access to Subsidized Food Grains: This is the primary benefit, allowing the family to purchase essential commodities like rice, wheat, sugar, and kerosene at highly subsidized rates from Fair Price Shops (FPS).
  • AAY (Poorest of Poor): Entitled to 35 kg of food grains per family per month
.
  • PHH (Priority Household): Entitled to 5 kg of food grains per person per month.
2. Proof of Identity and Address: It serves as a valid and universally accepted Photo Identity and Proof of Residence for applying for other essential documents (like a Domicile Certificate, Voter ID, or bank accounts).

3. Access to Welfare Schemes: It is often a mandatory document required to avail benefits under various other state and central government welfare schemes targeted at the economically weaker sections.

4. One Nation, One Ration Card (ONORC): This initiative, enabled by the Ration Card and Aadhaar linking, allows beneficiaries to lift their entitled food grains from any Fair Price Shop (FPS) across the country, ensuring food security for internal migrants.
